Module # 1 First Assignment

Module # 1 First Assignment

1.  Read the syllabus and make sure you understand the guideline for this class.

I understand the syllabus and guidelines for this class.

2. Open account on any blog sites (blogger.com, wordpress.com, or blog.usf.edu), and share the site via Canvas assignment.

3. In your first blog posting describes your first visual analytics that caught your eyes in the recent weeks. For example, the history of earthquakes taken from www.ngdc.gov  (Links to an external site.)and produced by Cindy Wang (Links to an external site.)

The data visualization that caught my eye was this one by USAFacts.org (https://usafacts.org/articles/how-many-people-work-for-the-federal-government/)

The reason why I found this visualization interesting is due to the shift in American politics that will occur this month. The appointed President declared one of his goals was to restructure how Federal work is being performed. He believes there are resources not appropriately being allocated. As you can see from the chart on the left, there are an estimated 3 million Federal employees reported on November 2024. The big question is how will this change in this following presidency? Will we see a big decline that we haven't seen since the 1940s-1950s? When examining the bubble map to the right, there is a a larger presence in Federal workers towards the East Coast, especially the D.C. area. Will lingering Federal worker populations dwindle or expand during this new Presidency? I am interested to look back to this visualization in a few months.

According to Keim et. al (2008) the key terms in visual analytics include: Data, Visualization, knowledge and models.

Using this model, I believe the visualization that I selected falls under these guidelines. We can see various means of data being displayed through eye-catching visualizations. This data was harvested by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This data was collected and structured to provide understandable visualizations. These visualizations were accomplished through bubble maps and line charts. We as the audience are able to deduct and draw meaningful conclusions. As stated, I picked this example because it has relevance to ongoing political affairs. Some may use this data to support their argument or argue against the number of current Federal workers. This data was more so collected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. After reading through the article presented by the people who made these visualizations, they performed more visualization practices rather than modeling. However, this conjoined effort by both of these entities (Bureau of Labor Statistics and USAFacts.org) showcases the proper requirements highlighted by Keim et. al (2008), to establish digestible data.
