Module #2

Module #2

For this week's assignment, I focused on the dataset titled Museums, Aquariums, and Zoos found on kaggle. (https://www.kaggle.com/datasets/imls/museum-directory?resource=download&select=museums.csv).

This dataset was extremely interesting to me. It showed the various types of museums found within the United States. Using Tableu, I was able to create various visualizations.

Visualization 1:

This visualization shows the total amount of all forms of museums/aquariums/zoos found in each state.

In this image, California is shown to have the most amount of museums/aquariums/zoos/etc. at 2,670.

Whereas in this image, Nevada has only 174 museums/aquariums/zoos/etc.

Visualization 2:
I wanted to create a visualization that highlights the different museums of an area. For the first one, I will be focusing on the state of Florida.

I wanted to focus on specific places such as history museum, science and tech planetariums, botanical garden, art museum, children's museum, and lastly zoos and aquariums.

From this visualization of Florida, we are able to see interesting observations. There is a higher quantity of botanical gardens and history museums. Botanical gardens in Florida tend to trail along the coastal areas of Florida. There were more options that I deselected because I believed it would have caused over-saturation to the map. This brings up areas of improvement. If I want to visualize more types of museums, I need a stronger method to differentiate the various dots. I believe one method would be utilizing a pie chart for each state the demonstrates the variance of museums. This is easier to look at as it shows a quick glimpse of the different ratios.

I came up with a solution to this in my next visualization. Using Tableau, I was able to create a visualization that breaks down the amount and variety of different museums in each state.

Visualization 3:

Here we can see there are 53 are museums in California.

Here we see 188 Historic Preservations in Texas.

Here we see 12 Science & Technology Museums or Planetariums.

This is the complete key used for this visualization.

I believe this visualization provides the most useful information to me at a moments notice. I am able to quickly collect the amount and type of museum at a moments notice. If I have to change this method, I would improve the aesthetic appeal of the chart. I could also add text in the pie chart for more clarification. Overall, there are definitely areas of improvement that can be made but I believe I have a solid foundation in creating an effective visualization that shows the various forms of museums and exhibits across the United States.
